“But, after all, the aim of art is to create space – space that is not compromised by decoration or illustration, space within which the subjects of painting can live.”- Frank Stella (1986)

The Collective of Contemporary Artists (CoCA) is the current incantation of the Art Needs Space (AnS) project initiated by the Goethe Institut Colombo and the Colombo Art Biennale (CAB) in 2011. The project was kick started by Florian Waldvogel who is a curator at the world renowned Kunstverein in Hamburg, who was invited by the Goethe Institute to get the AnS workshop up and running.

This dynamic cluster of contemporary artists are engaged in the laborious task of trying to break down the premise of gallery and museums viewed art while emphasizes the concept of alternative space, the status quo of art, and challenges the art itself. As art in the modern context is one that mirrors views of space and vision from a myriad of perspectives, and these artists have frequently favoured non-traditional approaches to compositional dilemmas.
