SRILANKAN CUSINE: Sri Lankan cuisine has been influenced by many historical, cultural factors such as Indians, Arabs, Malays, Portuguese, Dutch and English. The staple dish is rice and curry along with other curries made with vegetables, lentils, or fruits. The curries are mostly coconut milk based. Dishes are accompanied by pickled fruits or vegetables, chutneys, and sambols. Especially common is coconut sambol, a paste of ground coconut mixed with chili peppers, dried Maldive fish, and lime juice.


KOTTU: Kottu is a spicy Sri Lankan stir-fry of shredded roti bread with vegetables. Optional ingredients include eggs, meat, or cheese.

HOPPERS: Hoppers (appa) are a range of dishes based on a fermented batter, usually made of rice flour and coconut milk with spices. The dish is pan-fried or steamed. Its is often served with a vegetable stew and spiced coconut paste.

LAMPRAIS: A Dutch Burgher-influenced dish, lamprais is rice boiled in stock accompanied by frikkadels (frikadeller meatballs), a mixed meat curry, blachan, aubergine curry, and seeni sambol. All of this is then wrapped in a banana leaf and baked in an oven.

STRING HOPPERS: String hoppers (idiyappa) are made from a hot-water dough of rice meal or wheat flour. The dough is pressed out in circlets from a string mold onto small wicker mats, and then steamed.


COCONUT WATER: Coconut water, either directly from a fresh king coconuts or canned is plentiful and cheap everywhere you go around the island

ARRACK : Another coconut drink, but this time made with fermented coconut flower. This is a popular staple to many Southeast Asian countries including Sri Lanka. You can find some low-grade distilled version made locally or some nicer versions aged in oak for many years to mellow out the flavors. A popular combination drink is mixing Arak with ginger beer.

GINGER BEER: This is typically the poor mans beer, ginger is a very popular and refreshing drink in Sri Lanka with main brands like Elephant ginger beer or EGB and made with 100 percent natural ginger extract.

LION BEER: The beer of Sri Lanka made by industry giant Carlsburg. It’s a simple and refreshing beer perfect for those hot days and evenings while you are waiting for that wonderful sunset moment.
