Varatharajan Balamurugan

While peace is present without bomb blast or violence, nowadays the man who is trying to lead a happy and peaceful life wages a war within himself for relief from mental and physical traumas which were imposed by a protracted war. The art work tries to express the mentality of people approaching even peace and happiness with a fearful mentality.

The upright figure with cracks on the body, the bunkers and snakes express the war experiences. The National Identity card fixed on the chest displays the life led under military control. Butterflies and the opened window express peaceful life and independence.

The people who were once living in the war situation are moving into a peaceful life. Peace is ‘becoming’ to these people.

Balamurugan is currently a Lecturer in the Art & Design unit of the University of Jaffna. He has been greatly influenced by the guidance of renowned artists like Chandragupta Thenuwara and T Sanaathanan along with his father’s work in the field of art.

He has completed his M.V.A – Painting at the College of Fine Arts, Karnataka Chithra Kala Parishath, affiliated to Bangalore University, India under the guidance of Prathepa Madam and Anilkumar.
