Shanthamani Muddaiah

“Metamorphosis Favourite” is a pupa constructed with wood charcoal and cotton rag pulp, material that suggest decay, morbidity and death. It evokes the landscape of a violent aftermath, but the creation of a positive form (the Pupa) using fragmented pieces of burnt charcoal, it represents the unshakeable spirit of man. This piece symbolizes the stage representing the evolution of the pupa and the butterfly that is yet to fly. It is a space of transition with umpteen possibilities of new ideas, orders and life that shape the future. It is the time when the past is reflected upon and the time which embraces the promise of the future.

Shantamani, an artist with seventeen years of experience working in the field of visual arts, has throughout her career been exploring material and content that influences geography and culture. She has a few solos and group shows to her credit in different parts of the world and with work in many reputed collections through out the world. Received a Charles Wallace scholarship, in 2004 to study Paper-Making in Scotland, and a National Junior Fellowship in 2006-08 to work with paper sculpting.
